Organization The Orange County Community Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit, 501(C)(3) organization governed by a Board of Directors. The members of the Board of Directors represent a broad spectrum of diversity in the area we serve. Our Board’s members serve without compensation and are committed to improving the quality of life in this community. The Board of Directors establishes the policies and procedures of the Foundation and ensures that the Foundation has the funding, staff, facilities and equipment needed to fulfill its mission. The Board of Directors delegates responsibility for implementation of its policies and directives to the Executive Director, who the Board of Directors employs to run the day-to-day operations of the Foundation. The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors. History and Purpose Organized in December 1996, the Orange County Community Foundation operated as an affiliate fund of the Lawrence County Community Foundation, Inc. The Foundation incorporated on March 8, 2000, and received its 501(C) (3) from the IRS in May of 2001. On October 1, 2001, the Orange County Community Foundation, Inc. began operating as an independent entity, thus ending the affiliate relationship with the Lawrence County Community Foundation, Inc. The primary purpose of the Foundation is to fulfill the charitable wishes of its donors. The generosity of the Foundation’s donors make it possible to grant money to local charities and to award a number of scholarships. To date, the Community Foundation, through its relationship with donors, has granted $2.1 million to the Orange County community in the form of direct grants, challenge grants, scholarships, and grants from the proceeds of endowed funds. The Foundation holds over 90 funds with current assets totaling nearly $6,000,000. The OCCF Board of Directors hired the Foundation’s first executive director in the fall of 2000 and established its first office on the corner of the Public Square. In 2004, the Foundation offices were moved to a new non-profit resource center at 112 West Water Street in Paoli. After the disaffiliation from the Lawrence County Community Foundation in the fall of 2001, the foundation hired support staff for business operations and programming. In many instances, the Community Foundation serves as the convener – bringing people together to address the needs of the community and together finding solutions. One such effort is CAPE. The Orange County Community Foundation, in collaboration with the community foundations of Martin, Washington and Lawrence Counties, was successful in securing a $13.6 million grant to form a Community Alliance to Promote Education (CAPE) for the region. The consortium is in its second year of operation. CAPE strives to create “cradle-to-grave” learning opportunities for the communities served. The Orange County Community Foundation is a member of the Council on Foundations and the Indiana Grantmaker’s Alliance, and adheres to both the national and state code of ethics and standards.
